More about vitamin D
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is commonly referred to as the "sunshine vitamin” although many do not spend enough time outdoors to reap the benefits. Vitamin D helps maintain healthy bones by stimulating the absorption of calcium in the body. It is an essential nutrient involved in bone health, muscle function and numerous other processes. It also plays an important role in immune function.
What the studies say
A Ministry of Health Study found that 27.1 percent of New Zealand adults were below the recommended level of vitamin D. Recently, researchers have had a renewed interest in vitamin D, finding it provides various benefits to health, previously unknown. Vitamin D helps maintain healthy bones by stimulating calcium absorption in the body. Without it, the body is unable to utilise the calcium supplied via diet or supplements. The body manufactures vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight at the right time of day and season, therefore it is recommended that people not regularly exposed to sunlight or those who use sunscreen, should supplement with the nutrient.
